The museum heritage village is set in the time of 1890-1940. The village has five buildings that were originally in the Lumsden area and moved to the museum site. Some of the buildings are set up to display life in this time period. The Hunter house displays items would have appeared in a family’s home. Our log house was inhabited by two brothers until the 1970's. Most of the furniture displayed belonged to the Edwards brothers. Kedelston School and Tregarva Hall, contain a variety of displays, such as indigenous artifacts, explanations of the local geography, notable people, wartime memorabilia, changes in technology, just to name a few. The Tractor Shed houses a large collection of vintage John Deere tractors along with a variety other agricultural and automotive artifacts. As you walk the gravel road from building to building it is easy to imagine you are walking through small town Saskatchewan 100 years ago.
Who established the museum?
The Lumsden Historical Society Inc. was founded in September 1987, and it made its most immediate and important aim the establishment of a Lumsden and District Museum and Heritage Village. The primary reason for this decision was to preserve the history of Lumsden and its surrounding district.
A board of directors was established at this time. This group of dedicated individuals worked tirelessly to bring in buildings and artifacts, set up displays. The Lumsden Museum was officially opened in 1989. The museum continues to be operated by as a non-profit with a dedicated board of directors and many hard working volunteers. This group of committed individuals work tirelessly to maintain the grounds, refresh displays, create learning opportunities for classrooms, give tours, and host events.
